Overview

At iTransport, highway design is focused on unlocking development potential by demonstrating that safe, efficient, and appropriate access can be achieved in line with national standards and local authority requirements to help clients realise their development aspirations.

Highway design is often the point where planning strategy becomes something tangible.

By aligning technical design with planning strategy, we help ensure proposals are both deliverable and defensible through the planning process.

What it involves

Our highway design service covers the development of on-site and off-site highway solutions, from early feasibility through to planning submission. This includes site access design, internal road layouts, junction design, visibility assessments, active travel corridors and swept path analysis, all prepared in accordance with relevant standards such as NPPF, DMRB, Manual for Streets and local highway guidance.

Designs are developed to support walking, cycling and public transport, while promoting safe and inclusive movement and responding to placemaking and environmental objectives.

Designs are informed by a detailed understanding of when, why and how people travel, including movement on foot, by bicycle and by public transport, as well as traffic impacts and future growth, ensuring proposals are practical and proportionate.

Highway design is often closely integrated with Transport Assessments, Travel Plans and masterplanning input, allowing access strategy, layout and mitigation to evolve together. Our focus is on resolving constraints, managing highway authority expectations and producing clear, technically robust designs to support positive decision making.

How we add Value

iTransport adds value through a practical, planning-led approach to highway design. Our team brings strong technical judgement and senior oversight at concept and preliminary design stages to develop innovative, cost-effective and deliverable highway solutions that align with the planning strategy.

We understand how highway authorities assess schemes and shape designs to address key technical considerations early, helping to reduce the risk of objection, delay or redesign. Early identification of constraints, constructive engagement with stakeholders, and a clear appreciation of future S278 and S38 approval pathways supports smoother progression through planning.

By focusing on deliverability, we help clients make confident decisions, de-risk complex sites, and maintain momentum from concept through to consent and into delivery.
