Travel Planning

Practical plans to support active travel.

Travel Plans are a key part of the planning process, helping show how sustainable and active travel will be encouraged across a scheme. From residential and employment developments to larger mixed-use sites, they support the wider transport vision and set out practical, deliverable measures as part of a proportionate mitigation strategy.

Overview

The scope of each Travel Plan is shaped by the scale, type and ambition of the development. Some schemes require a Framework Travel Plan to support an outline application, while others need a more detailed Full Travel Plan tied to specific measures, monitoring and Section 106 obligations.

Travel Plans are about more than policy compliance.

At iTransport, we prepare Travel Plans that are practical, deliverable and tailored to how a development will actually operate — then help make sure they are implemented effectively once planning permission is secured.

What it involves

Prior to any planning application that requires a Travel Plan, we assess the scheme and its ambitions, identifying opportunities to support sustainable and active travel from the outset. We then develop a clear strategy, setting out practical measures that align with the site’s vision and planning requirements, including Section 106 obligations.

For most of the larger projects we support, we produce Travel Plans from Framework through to Full Travel Plans. Travel Plan Coordination then begins once planning permission is secured and continues through to occupation and beyond.

Our role often includes preparing clear, engaging information for residents, staff and users, including visual materials that support informed travel choices. Throughout the monitoring period, we assess the development in line with agreed requirements and report progress against the targets set with the Local Highway Authority.

How we add Value

We don’t just produce Travel Plans — we help bring them to life. iTransport regularly implements Travel Plans for developers, supporting schemes ranging from 100 to 3,000 homes.

As a practice, we act as Travel Plan Coordinators for over 50 developments, covering around 20,000 homes and employment sites. We work closely with Local Highway Authorities to manage and deliver Travel Plans from start to finish, as well as preparing plans across a wide range of schemes, from smaller sites to large mixed-use developments.

Our approach is practical and focused on delivery. We work closely with stakeholders and local organisations, prepare clear and engaging communications, and carry out surveys and monitoring to track progress and demonstrate impact. The result is Travel Plans that are not only designed to meet targets, but implemented efficiently and effectively in real-world conditions.
