Ultra-Rapid EV Charging Hubs

Transport planning support for ultra-rapid EV charging hubs across London and the UK, helping operators secure consent for critical low-carbon roadside infrastructure.

Overview

iTransport has supported the delivery of ultra-rapid electric vehicle charging hubs for operators including Fastned and Fast Places across the country. Fast Places, a joint venture between Fastned and Places for London, Transport for London’s property arm, has been established to accelerate London’s transition to electric mobility and support the Mayor of London’s ambition for a net-zero carbon city by 2030.

These projects typically involve the installation of multiple high-powered charging bays, associated substation infrastructure and distinctive canopy structures, often within constrained roadside or commercially active sites. The client’s objective is to secure timely planning consent and enable rapid rollout in response to growing EV adoption and the wider decarbonisation of the transport network.

Although EV charging hubs are sustainable in purpose, they are often subject to close scrutiny in planning and highway terms. Key challenges include demonstrating that vehicle movements will not create unacceptable impacts on network capacity, understanding the operational effect of dwell times linked to rapid charging, and ensuring safe access and circulation within tight sites. In many cases, proposals also sit within evolving policy environments where local authorities are balancing sustainability ambitions with design, amenity and highway considerations.

Our approach

iTransport provides strategic transport advice from the earliest site feasibility stage through to planning determination and discharge of conditions. Our role typically includes Transport Statements, swept path analysis, access strategy design and trip generation forecasting, as well as input at site selection stage to help shape wider project decisions.

A central element of our approach is applying informed professional judgement to trip generation. Unlike more conventional roadside uses, EV charging hubs are characterised by relatively short dwell times and a high proportion of pass-by or reassigned trips, rather than wholly new traffic. We draw on emerging industry data, evidence from comparable sites and sensitivity testing to ensure that forecasts are both robust and proportionate.

We also advise on internal layout design, helping ensure sites work safely and efficiently in operation. This includes assessing manoeuvring space, bay arrangement, entry and exit geometry, pedestrian routes and the management of interactions between vehicles arriving, charging and departing. Where charging hubs are co-located with retail or other commercial uses, we assess cumulative impacts and identify opportunities to improve operational efficiency.

Alongside the technical work, iTransport works closely with Fastned’s wider internal teams, helping coordinate required inputs and next steps across the project lifecycle. This joined-up approach supports smoother planning discussions and a more efficient route to delivery.

Outcomes & Impact

Our transport support has helped secure planning permission for multiple ultra-rapid EV charging hubs, enabling operators to expand in response to increasing demand for high-quality charging infrastructure.

By demonstrating that charging trips are often pass-by or reassigned rather than wholly new demand, iTransport has frequently helped address concerns around traffic impact and highway capacity. Clear and operationally robust access and layout strategies have also reduced safety risk and given decision-makers confidence that sites can function efficiently, even in constrained locations or alongside other roadside uses.

More broadly, our work has helped strengthen the planning case for this type of infrastructure by showing how EV charging hubs support wider policy objectives around decarbonisation, modal transition and long-term network resilience. Through clear advice, technical rigour and proactive engagement, iTransport has helped clients navigate complex planning environments and bring forward nationally significant low-emission infrastructure at pace.
